National Child Awareness Month is an effort led by Festival of Children Foundation to focus the attention of our Nation on the most critical issues facing children today.

This monthlong September celebration aims to raise awareness of our children based on four guiding principles:

    • Nurture one child. That’s all it takes to make a difference.
    • Children are the future of philanthropy. It’s our responsibility to teach them the importance of sharing and giving back.
    • Actions speak louder than words. Find a children’s cause that’s important to you and get involved.
    • Many hands make light work. So join forces with those who share your goals and dreams.

10 Things you can do to celebrate National Child Awareness Month

    1. Give a child you know a hug or a smile and let them know they are special.

    2. Share a favorite book with a child – ask them to read it to you or write a new story together.

    3. Volunteer your time with a charity that serves children; become a mentor or donate school supplies to a local school.

    4. Give a child the chance to experience the gift of volunteerism; take them to a soup kitchen to serve food or to help clean up a local park.

    5. Collect gently used clothes and toys and take them to a shelter or donation center. Have kids help you choose the items and the benefitting charity.

    6. Encourage a child to learn about the importance of saving and giving by starting a piggy bank collection. Help them understand about putting aside a percentage to donate to a cause that’s important to them. Encourage giving by matching their collections!

    7. Take a day off “just because” and spend it with your child.

    8. Coordinate with existing community groups (i.e. youth sports teams, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) to participate in NCAM activities throughout the month.

    9. Encourage teachers and school administrators to celebrate National Child Awareness Month (NCAM) by hosting a classroom project during the month.

    10. Share what NCAM means to you and how you celebrate the month via your social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs.
